ATMOSPHERIC RAY OF LIGHT is a look inside the process behind Beyond Handpan... a half-hour improvisation created with the complete performance rig working as a single interconnected instrument.
Rather than composing the piece in advance, I begin with the handpan and build the sound world in real time. Layers emerge through synthesis, sequencing, looping and effects, each one influencing what I play next. The process is less about controlling every element than listening to what the system is becoming and responding to it.
This is really what Beyond Handpan means to me... the handpan remains at the center, but the electronics become collaborators, allowing a simple acoustic instrument to open into a much larger sonic space.
