Info
HAIKU & HANDPANS is a collaboration with poet Chuck Brickley exploring what happens when two very different forms of expression meet... the compression of haiku and the expansive resonance of the handpan.
Chuck reads a haiku, then we leave space for it to settle. I respond not by illustrating the poem, but by allowing it to change what I hear and where the music goes. The handpan opens the space outward... then silence gathers it again before the next poem begins.
Over the course of the performance, a kind of architecture of attention emerges: poem focuses... silence holds... music loosens... resonance widens... and a new poem begins.
Like the generative work elsewhere on this site, the thing that interests me most is what emerges between the forms... an experience that neither poetry nor music quite creates on its own.
